Instruction

Week 2

Based on the game "Brawl Star", we need to come out with a minimum of 3 character design ideas that can fit into the game well. So in the first week, we should start to play the game and understand the basic structure of the game and how the game works.

Feedback: Add something to jiangshi to make the silhouette fun. For trolls, don't bring soft items, it is hard to make it in the game. Unicorn, the clothes are too flat, add more detail.

Week 3

After studying the silhouettes of different class characters from Brawl Star, I did more detailed sketches for the characters.

Also did some research on the battle arena and did some sketches for it, below is the arena sketch for jiangshi (Chinese zombie) and unicorn.

Feedback: Overall is good, now can choose to focus on one character.

Week 4

This week I started to create the attack action for my character, although I have already decided to work on my Chinese zombie, I still created the action for all my characters as I still have time for it.

Feedback
: Can add more detail for the action. Can start to do it in 3D.

Week 5

Designing moves for a character does make the character more interesting, as it adds to its overall personality and characterization through the move design.

Also, I started 3D sculpting with Zbrush and I used Trolls to practice sculpting because after a holiday I had forgotten how to use Zbrush. But luckily I did learn how to use Zbrush properly last semester, so I had a little problem using it this time.

Feedback: Overall is good, can start to do sculpting, remember to do it in an A pose or T pose.

Week 6

I did more research on the arena and came out with a more detailed sketch of the Chinese zombie's arena. Also, I decided to work on Chinese zombies for the 3D sculpting, and I did a final confirmation on the design of my model.

Feedback: For the arena, before going into 3D, do a simple block out in 2D first, and add more elements like bones, and rubbish to make it interesting.

Week 7

This week I continued with the arena design and also my 3D sculpting in Zbrush. I didn't face many problems when doing the arena design, but for the 3D sculpting I faced the same problem as last semester, the wrinkles of clothes.

Feedback: The arena design overall is good. For 3D, add more detail for the ear, done the model before next class.

Week 8-10

I done my 3D sculpting this week as an arena assets design and final sketch.

Feedback: For 3D, the calves should be slightly raised, a collar added, the mouth moved back a bit, and the colors too dark.

Week 11

I redo the coloring part in Zbrush instead of using Photoshop.

Started to do arena in 3D using Blender, still not familiar with Blender so the process is a bit slow.

Also, this week Mr. Kannan started to teach us how to use Topogun to do retopo, it looks difficult and the next course will be more technically oriented.

Feedback: The tree looks bad, try to redo it or just remove it.

Week 12

We didn't show a lot of progress this week as we started to learn and tried out the Topogun. I believe that the beginning of learning any software is full of frustration, so although it is difficult, seeing everyone with me makes me full of passion!

Feedback: Add more detail to the arena, reference: bake n switch.

Week 13

While doing the retopo I felt that my 3D arena was getting uglier the more I looked at it, so I decided to stay up late and redo it!

The whole process for importing my character into Unreal Engine is:

1. Export the model separately as OBJ from Zbrush to Topogun
2. After retopo export as OBJ again
3. Import to Blender and do UV unwrap
4. Add a material for each part and rename it
5. Export from Blender as FBX
6. Import to Substance Painter
7. Add texture and detail
8. Bake it
9. Import to Unreal Engine

And now I am still at stage 3 and facing a lot of problems... My Blender can't show the result of UV unwrap.

Feedback: The tree still looks weird.

Week 14

Finally got the UV unwrapping done and was able to paint in Substance Painter, it doesn't look good but it works without a hitch. Since it's all my first time with the software and I've had a short time to learn it, it's ugly but it's something to understand!

Glad to see it working! At this stage, it is important to notice that all meshes that already unwrapping shouldn't overlap with each other, as it will cause problems when you try to paint on it in Substance Painter.

Feedback: -

Week 15

After I had finished painting in Substance Painter, the model that was imported into Unreal Engine was incomplete, part of it disappeared, so I wasn't going to keep trying to apply texture to it. I decided to try it in Unity first.

Using Unity is quite successful, but the problem I'm having is that the texture won't bind to my mesh, and parts of the texture will run out of place.

I also tried to use Mixamo to get my model to move, but I couldn't position it because my model's arms were bent. So sad, but when semester break I will try it again using the model from last semester.

So, after asking other classmates, I realized that it was because I imported the model file of the Substance Painter when I imported it, but I should have actually imported Blender's FBX file.

After fixing this problem, it works!

In addition, through minor project we met a technician from EDT who taught us how to make models HD inside Unreal Engine.

So I captured a screenshot using Unreal Engine and I think that's the final outcome.

Below is my final outcome and the art bible.

Reflection: The first half of this module is completely different from the second half, the first part is character design and 3D modeling which I am familiar with but the second part of the course suddenly becomes very technical with a few weeks left, but I know that Mr. Kannan just wants us to understand the whole process of game production. I think the second half of this module was very interesting, although I really encountered a lot of problems, and each software was the first time, the learning time was too short which made it very difficult for me to master, but fortunately, Mr. Kannan has helped us, and my classmates are very willing to help me. So my overall learning experience was enjoyable and I learned a lot of new things!
