Vehicle and Props Design

Instruction

Week2(Public Holiday)

Week 3

Deconstruction exercise

During week 1, we were supposed to complete the deconstruction exercise, which is using shape to block out the vehicles and try to understand the mechanism and structure. I did start that exercise but still couldn't complete it before the week 3 submission, so Mr. Kannan allowed me to extend the submission deadline to week 4, and I did finish on time.

We were also asked to do research on different terrain vehicles (sea, land, air), we could come out with the idea of vehicles based on movies/games/ animation and others. So I decided to use the same IP with my environment art, which is the animation "Spirited Away".

After creating my mood board, I started to do my sketch. I try to do it quickly as Mr. Kannan said we shouldn't waste too much time on sketching. I did 20 sketches including 7 land vehicles, 7 air vehicles, and 6 water vehicles. I would like to do more as I start to discover the fun of brainstorming ideas, but I have no time to do so, so I just submit what I have.

Feedback: I have to put more effort into my value painting, try to make it more 3D, and show the structure clearly. Can work with whatever sketch I like but avoid something like sketch 17, too simple and boring.

Week 4

We continued our process by enhancing our sketch, I also finalized my mood board by doing more research. By doing more research on Miyazaki's art style and analysis of vehicles that occur in Ghibli's animation, I have a deeper understanding and gain more ideas to work on the detailed sketch.

"Spirited Away" is a sweet and cozy movie, this is the feeling I would like to convey when I created my vehicles. For my vehicles, I would like to keep the mechanism simple and not complicated like Arcane or any AAA games, but it is still detailed and with a human touch.

Feedback: Mr. Kannan asked me to come out with more backstory for the vehicles, and try out more complex structure for the truck (detailed sketch 4), like changing the wheel to tank's wheel. Go get more influence from an animation called "Robots", and also start to add color to the vehicles.

Week 5

Based on what I chose last week, I did an upgrade sketch to find out more interesting combinations, by doing more sketches to explore more complex structures.

Feedback: For the floatplane upgrade sketch, Mr. Kannan liked the skeleton one. Pay attention to the perspective and value of the truck, draw it in 1/3 will help a lot when doing 3D modeling. For color testing-Submarine (5), Truck (2,5).

Week 6

This week I locked in on the vehicle's exterior design, I dropped the floatplane and decided to focus on the submarine and the truck.

Feedback: The submarine is too flat, try to overlap it to make it more interesting. Now just focus on the submarine, start to color it, and start to do 3D in blender.

Week 7-9

Mr Kannan happened to have something going on, plus ran into independent learning week, so I finally had time to finish my previously accumulated homework. There's really not enough time in the day.

Since I had more time this time, I made fast progress this time. I wasn't really satisfied with my previous sketch, so I tried to try a more cyberpunk style, I referenced Howl Moving Castle's castle design and modified my sketch, and I'm happy with the result. I also went straight to coloring the submarine this time because I had already done the color testing last time.

Feedback: It's a lot better than before, just add a lid for the glass to make it more interesting.

Week 10-11

I finalize my exterior as project 1, and I am happy that we can finally move on to project 2 which is props and interior.

I have done the basic 3D modeling of the submarine in Blender, which is a huge task for me as this is my first time using Blender, and I do need a period of time to be familiar with the software.

For the interior, I think perspective is my biggest setback, it is so hard to find a reference for a round space like my submarine, so I waste so much time studying the perspective.

Feedback: Mr. Kannan likes the idea for the interior, just to pay attention to the PERSPECTIVE (back)!!!

Week 12

I added some detail for the submarine exterior in Blender, the software is still so hard for me, but I can feel I'm making progress which is good news.

Feedback: Write probably. All good can start to do props.

Week 13

I think it is fun doing props because I don't have to pay so much attention to the perspective. I have done the prop's sketch and directly moving on to 3D modeling, I am now more familiar with Blender, and I can work faster now!

Feedback: Adding more detail by using bevel, the seat is too sharp and non-ergonomic, try to add on some cushions.

Week 14

Doing the interior in Blender was so satisfying, I can use Blender pretty well now! I'm trying to add more details to make the overall picture richer, and I'm also starting to experiment with adding lighting when I'm done with the interior.

Feedback: Overall is good, but the seat is too straight, adjust the backrests.

Week 15

Mr. Kanaan allowed us to extend the submission date, which I really needed. I drew more details on the exterior and interior of the submarine in Photoshop. We were also asked to create a 16:9 art bible to introduce our work, which was quite a daunting task for me since I suck at graphic design.

I'm happy with my props and interior, but for the exterior, I actually think there's a lot of room for improvement. But due to time constraints, I can't redo it, I can only add more details based on the original foundation.

Graphic design is really hard for me, I spent a lot of time looking for references but couldn't find any that fit, and finally relied on my own ideas to make it. I'm not very happy with the finished product, but at least it's neat.

Reflection:

For these 14 weeks of study, I think I am full of rewards. I didn't really like this module at the beginning because I usually don't have much interest in vehicles, but after doing some preliminary research and observation, I realized that vehicle design can also be very interesting. My style also changed from a simple and cute style to a more complex and industrial style. I'm glad I challenged a different style in this process, it's very interesting and I'm very satisfied.

Other than that, I think I've really made a lot of progress in using the software. At first, I had to keep asking my friends from other modules for advice because I really didn't know anything about Blender, but slowly I realized that I could master it. Just like I started with Zbrush, I was very annoyed and frustrated with Blender at first, but I'm glad that it took me a semester to learn the basics of Blender, and I'll try to keep practicing during the holidays to hopefully get comfortable with the software.
