CHARACTER DESIGN MIB

Concept World Creation

In the week 1 lecturer, we were given the module briefing and were told that we have to build a character that can fit in the online game Genshin Impact. So we have to do the research on our own and show the brief idea to Miss Anis in next week's class.

Moodboard

Fig 1.1 Moodboard

Above is my mood board, and I was trying to do a character that has the characteristic of the Japanese samurai. Since I am a big fan of the anime Demon Slayer, so I try to include the elements of the sword in my character. And since my character has the Japanese style and Miss Anis suggested it can be in the Inazuma, also don't forget to do more research about the other character that exist in Inazuma to create a relationship between those characters with mine.

Backstory

Ruri is a girl born in Inazuma. Her parents were local villagers, but they tragically passed away due to a sudden disaster when she was very young. During that disaster, one of the monks at the Inazuma Temple noticed Ruri's special talent and signs of the element of fire and decided to adopt her and bring her back to the temple. Ruri spent her happy childhood in the shelter of Inazuma Temple. She received rigorous training and education in martial arts and various mystical temple arts, and even learn Meikyou Shisui Art from Domon. Ruri has a strong attraction to the element of fire and has gradually mastered the ability to manipulate flames. Her mentors saw her potential and decided to make her the guardian of fire at Inazuma's temple.

However, at the age of 14, her fortunes have been reversed. At that time, Ayaka Kamisato, the heir to the Inazuma domain and her childhood friend, faced threats from other forces. Ayaka's family decided to provide her with more protection, and they chose Ruri as her retainer. Ruri is greatly honored by this opportunity and is willing to do all she can to protect and serve Ayaka, Ruri gave up her peaceful life in the temple to follow Ayaka into the vast and dangerous world. As her retainer, Ruri utilizes the Meikyou Shisui Art and fire powers she acquired during her temple training, using swords and flames to display her own unique fighting style.

Personality & Hobbies

Ruri is tough and loyal and holds Ayaka in deep reverence. She is very hardworking, always striving to improve her Meikyou Shisui Art skills and flame manipulation in order to become an excellent retainer. She's a naughty, active but responsible girl, able to keep her head in a moment of crisis, and does not hesitate to protect her master.

Despite her duties and tasks, Ruri has her own hobbies and interests. Ruri loves adventure and exploring unknown places. She often spends her free time exploring the mountains, forests, lakes, and rivers around Inazuma's territory. She has a passion for discovering new sites, studying strange plants, and searching for hidden treasures. In addition to this, Ruri is also a playful little girl.

Ruri rarely has the opportunity to play with children of her own age, so she plays by herself from time to time. She loves to play kendama, jump rope and enjoys using her pocket money to buy her favorite manga. These hobbies not only energize and delight Ruri but also help her find balance and inner peace in her adventures and journeys to protect Ayaka. Her combination of mischievousness and seriousness makes her a well-rounded and hard-to-ignore character.

Silhouette Sketches

In our first exercise, we need to draw 8 thumbnail silhouette sketches to help us get more ideas for character design through rough silhouette sketches.

I made 8 thumbnails of silhouette sketches and was more satisfied with No. 6. So I'm doing more in-depth research & thinking based on the silhouette sketch of No. 6.

Turnaround Sketch

When designing a character, a turnaround sketch is very important, it allows us to better think and observe the character's appearance and accessories, etc. It is a step that should not be ignored. I did t
