Task 2A & 2B

LECTURES

All lectures were completed in Task 1.

For this task, we can use the initials of our name, our first name, or our pet name. Explore and compose as many permutations and combinations of these initials. The final key artwork must be an elegant solution, not complicated or confusing that leads to a functional and communicable key artwork. This key artwork will subsequently be used in Task 2(B) collateral. Tasks 2(A) and 2(B) will require us to explore the boundaries of communication using the knowledge gained from all modules notwithstanding this semester’s exercises in Typographic Systems and Type & Play. Synthesize the knowledge and create a key artwork that excites you and is memorable.

In this task, it would be better to find some references to key artwork that contain alphabets than key artwork of other famous listed brands. Because in this task I will design a key artwork for myself, I will only learn the styles and the way others show their artwork, and finally, I have to do my own thinking and come up with my own completely unique design.

I tried to do a lot of different designs but couldn't actually meet my expectations, so I wanted to work digitally when I found my idea.

I chose "xienng" or "ng" as my main piece of design. It was difficult to create a design that included my name and represented me at the same time. Since I do not have any characteristics in my appearance, I decided to convey a feeling or atmosphere rather than characteristics of my own appearance.

I am very fond of nature and I also consider myself to be a person who admires nature and a simple way of life. Therefore, in my key artworks, I want to convey a sense of nature, simplicity, and basicity.

In the end, I decided to go with the last design, and I created several versions of the key artwork for further use in Task 2B.

Task 2B: Collateral

We were tasked to design a t-shirt/ a lapel pin, animated key artwork, and an Instagram account transforming the key artwork into a brand. We will work on the animated key artwork first and fine-tune the outcomes before going on to the other collateral material: a t-shirt, lapel pin, and finally an Instagram account.

When I created my animated key artwork, my idea was to keep it simple and concise. I tried to make all the strokes of the key artwork appear in a smooth and elegant way, and most importantly to keep the whole animation looking clean.

Below are my collateral work, as my brand is representing a sense of nature, I choose the color green and also the concept of environmental protection for the theme of collateral materials.

After creating my collateral materials, I started working on my Instagram account. Below is the first version of my Instagram post, but I started to feel dissatisfied with my work after looking at other students' work. Therefore, I created the second version of the post shown below.

REFLECTION

Experience:

It was fun to do this task, but at the same time, it was difficult to create a key artwork that would represent ourselves. In addition, I tried to make it more impressive so that those who have seen my key artwork can relate to me and even make it memorable.

Observation:

While doing this task, I did a lot of visual research online and by looking at other people's successful key artwork or logo designs, I observed that a good logo or key artwork is really important for an industry or personal brand. Because memorable and recognizable key artwork is one of the main reasons why a brand can win in the market.

Findings:

By analyzing successful logos/key artwork, I found that not only the logo or graphic itself can represent the brand, but sometimes people can even associate a specific brand or logo when they look at some colors. Therefore, I think it is really interesting how a successful logo/key artwork can be immersed in people's daily life.

Rob Carter, Philip B. Meggs, Ben Day, Sandra Maxa, Mark Sanders, (2015): typographic design: form and communication

The message of typography is verbal, visual, and vocal. While typography is read and interpreted, it can also be viewed and interpreted visually, audibly, and interpreted.

I was interested when I first learned that typography could convey a message through other methods instead of reading. And the article provides very interesting examples.
Consider the specific poem "Ping Pong".The geometric structure of this poem is made up of the repetition of the words ping and pong. When these words are repeated, they symbolize the sound of a ping pong ball, while the round letters p, o, and g reflect the shape of the ball. The g reflects the shape of the ball. The full impact of this poem is felt when it is read aloud. By hearing the sound and seeing the visual while hearing the sound, the message of the font is reinforced.
