Design Principle
Final Project: Visual analysis and final blog
Lecture 8
We are to utilize our understanding of design principles found in the design work. This project requires us to assess, investigate, document, and analyze a design material of our choice. We should notice, size, placement, purpose, and effectiveness, as well as aspects of design principles found in that work. Thereafter, we are to produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one we studied, or as a reaction to it. We should also apply knowledge of design principles in their design.
Within the theme of Reduced Inequalities, select an art/design work that revolves around the theme. Provide a 50-word explanation for the choice we made. Write a 500-word visual analysis, describing and analyzing the design principles of the selected design, and discussing/interpreting the value and meaning of the design work. Create a work of design of our own, inspired/influenced by/reacting to the one we had analyzed. Write a 200-word rationale explaining and defending the decisions made in our design.

Final Project
Based on the theme of "inequality", I have done some research on the inequality faced by this generation. Gender inequality, social inequality, education inequality, wealth inequality, opportunity inequality, income inequality, health care inequality, sanitary conditions inequality, treatment inequality, and others. Among all the inequality, gender inequality is one of the most common problems encountered in this era.
As gender inequality occurs in most countries, lagging countries, and even in developed countries. However, some inequality such as health care inequality or sanitary conditions inequality is often overlooked by the world, because it usually happens only in some countries that are very backward and lack education.

Visual research
I do some brief visual research on a few inequalities to decide which inequalities I want to work on it, and also to find the best artwork that I want to do my analysis.

Finally, I chose the following design work as my analysis piece. Although it is about domestic violence that happens to women, but I think I have done some research on the topic of gender inequality in the above visual research.

| <Love and Hate>, Liu Yan, Mainland China, 2021/04/23, Taiwan International Poster Design Award |
•
Phase 1: Observation
This series of three design works, <Love & Hate>, by Liu Yan comes in three different designs, all in one. The poster on the left uses the colors red, and white while using blue as the background. For the middle and the last design works, they also use the color red and white with their background color, except for the different background colors, all three design works use red and white as their main colors. This is a series of vertical design works and visually appears to have very few colors, just red
and white, also with the color of the background. In addition, the outline of
the artwork is bold and brutal, with some additional thin lines surrounding the
main character in each of the images, and the overall appearance of the poster is simple
and straightforward. There are also some handwritten fonts on the image.
•
Phase 2: Analysis
This
design uses the principle of contrast from the design principles. The design work uses only three colors ta make the whole visual
appearance clean and clear, making it easier to focus on the handwritten message the author wants to convey, while also keeping the poster in contrast and allowing
the viewer to emphasize the main theme the author wants to express. The overall color scheme of the poster is also according to the
design principles of unity, showing the harmony and balance of colors and making the overall image visually clean and comfortable. In addition, the outline of this artwork shows a sense
of violence, and rudeness, while the thin lines in the poster show the fluidity
and movement of the image.
•
Phase 3: Interpretation
This
is a poster designed to stop domestic violence against women, as Carl Jung
said, where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power
predominates, love is lacking, the one in the shadow of the other. Therefore,
the main theme of the poster is <Love and Hate>, the artist convey the message
that when you raise your hand in domestic violence, the love between the marriages
has been transformed into hate (Liu Yan, China). The color red always gives people a feeling of anger and annoyance, and this poster used a red hand to express the man who is violent to a woman. And for the woman, the color white gives the impression that the women are pale, innocent, and helpless. The sloppy handwriting suits the artwork well, showing a feeling of urgency and confusion.
This
poster was designed by a Chinese designer named Liu Yan, he/she didn’t mention where
the idea come from, but in my opinion, it resembles the cover design of Leon Trotsky’s
<Problems of everyday life>,
designed by Alexander Rodchenko in 1923. The similarities between the two are
that they both use simple and limited colors to create the contract and in
this way emphasize the main message, also the use of thin lines to enrich the
whole layout. Another similar artwork is Dobrolet, a poster designed for Russian
state airlines in 1923.

Sketches
I started sketching my sketches and I tried many different sketches to find the best one that would best convey my message.
 |
Figure 26, Sketch 1, by Ng Jia Xien, 6/20/2022
|
My first sketch shows a baby in a woman's belly, but we can't see his or her gender because his/ her genitals are mosaicked. But we can still know from the smiles on his or her parents' faces and even their body language that they love him/ her so much.
 |
Figure 27, Sketch 2, by Ng Jia Xien, 6/20/2022
|
My second sketch, it shows a claw machine with two people on either side trying to grab the things in the machine. However, we can see that one of the people does not have the handle of the claw machine. They both have a claw machine. They both have a claw, but one of them does not have a handle showing his lack of opportunity.
 |
Figure 28, Sketch 3, by Ng Jia Xien, 6/20/2022
|
My last sketch shows a relay race with different types of people, including boys, girls, elderly, pregnant, disabled, poor, and rich. It shows that even though we are different, we must work together to reach the ultimate common goal.
Process
I did some research by analyzing award-winning designs, and I found that a good poster doesn't need to be fancy or pretty, but the main purpose is for conveying a message, so sometimes a simple and basic design is better than a complex, elaborate one as it is easier to convey the message it is trying to express.

The above poster (figure 28, poster 1) is from sketch 2, I made some changes to the perspective to make it more interesting. But it seems too complicated and is hard to understand, I think it can't express my thought well to the audience. So I made another design.

The posters above (figure 29, 30, poster 2, and 3), which show the inequalities faced by the elderly and disabled, and the lecturer was satisfied with this design.

In this series of posters, which also show some races, I used the priority seat symbol to make it easier to understand, this idea came from sketch 3, and I made some improvements. The first poster (figure 31, poster 4) shows a relay race with two groups of people, but it doesn't show the racetrack clearly, so I came out with a second one. The next piece (figure 32, poster 5), it shows two groups of people having a tug-of-war, one group is able-bodied and one group is disabled.
At first, I only submitted the five posters mentioned above, but the lecturer suggested that I make a series of three posters. I didn't submit three posters because I was already running out of ideas, but since the lecturer suggested I make one more poster, so I spend another week thinking about the idea and doing some research about it. The website that the lecturer sent us about sustainable development goals 10, reduced inequalities mentions that there are some inequalities that occur in income, gender, age, disability, sexual preferences, race, religion, etc. So it occurred to me that I had already done inequalities in age and disability, so I decided to do the inequalities in gender.

My design expresses the inequalities faced by vulnerable groups such as the elderly, the disabled, and also women. I have enlarged specific body parts of humans that can represent their specific disabilities. The first piece shows a red hand and a blue hand playing an arm-wrestling game, with the red hand representing a young, and strong person and the blue hand representing an older person. In the second poster, a race is shown in which one of the runners is able-bodied and the other is disabled. And the last poster shows a man and a woman in a tug-of-war. All three posters have one thing in common in their use of color, which I use blue to represent the vulnerable groups and use the color red to represent the side that has the advantage in this unfair competition, and yellow color is for emphasize the stronger side. All three posters use simple colors to make them look clear and clean, and also to be able to focus on the main elements of the whole poster.
Feedback
Week 12
I need to fill in the credit field with more details about the year in which those posters were created or where I found these posters. Since I chose a series of posters, so I had to analyze the works systematically one by one. Put all design principles in the analysis and the feelings that I felt from the posters in interpretation. Also, remember to cite the words from the artist.
Week 13
Do more research on the gender preferences in sketch 1. The lecturer likes the idea of sketch 2, but needs to do more visual references to be clear about what kind of inequality of opportunity I want to express, is it education? or job? Sketch 3 doesn't show equal opportunity for all, it sounds reasonable and feasible, but the actual sketch show inconsistencies, so more research needs to be done.
Week 14
The way I gave the treatment and the way it was composed reached good communication. Two people gave the same rules, whether old or young, for the sport, whether the person is disabled or not, they start from the same starting point, so the inequality is there. It would be better if I did a series with three posters. I can understand the color system well, and the lecturer can see the subtlety and the treatment of the colors that show my poster as a set.

Brief reflection for weeks 10-11
This was my final project in my first semester, so I put more effort into it, but I don't seem to have grasped the essence of the project yet. Through my visual research, I saw a lot of great artwork or designs online, which showed me that I really need a lot more effort to be qualified to have my designs published in practice. But this project really gave me a chance to think about how to relate our own designs to a theme and try to make a poster that can actually be used in society, in commerce, and in the environment. In addition, in this project, I learned more about how to communicate ideas through my design clearly.
