Task 3B

LECTURES

With the knowledge and experience gained in the Exercises, Task 1and Task 2 , we have to synthesize and apply the learning in the following tasks: to express typographically a social message, greeting, or the like, that is relevant to the campus community at Taylor’s University or society at large. We may use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for the task. Upon completion of the static sticker, we will be required to animate the message. The animated version (512 px width, at 72 dpi) will be used on social platforms like Telegram/WhatsApp.

Task 3B: Type Design & Communication

Set a margin, and create columns and rows. Sketch our ideas down. We may create lettering, modify existing letters or use existing types to communicate our message. Save as PNG (without background and with a 7pt white outline) and as a PDF, upload the PNG to our e-portfolio, and embed the PDF (by uploading it first to your G-Drive) in our e-portfolio. Screengrab our phone with the sticker sent. We may use minor graphical elements or visuals to aid in our message and design.

We may use the appropriate color schemes after getting the black and white version approved. Ensure that the expression occupies the space and is legible and readable for its intended use. Upon completion of the designed sticker, selected stickers will be used for social platforms Telegram/WhatsApp. Design an attractive, functional, and visually impactful sticker.

Research

First, I did some research online to find some stickers related to happy birthday, and here are some different types of sticker designs.

Sketch

After doing my research, I had a clear understanding of what to do for Task 3B, so I started sketching.

We are asked to submit at least five sketches, and after consulting with the lecturer, he allow me to choose it by myself as all of the designs are acceptable, so I decided to choose number five and number two to transform into a digital version.

Digitalization

In Task 3B, we were allowed to use existing letters to communicate our message, so I used Britannie Bold and modified it.

I tried different types of design, and finally still decided to work with number two or five.

After getting feedback from the lecturer, he said that I could add color with sketch2 or 5. So I decided to apply color to both stickers.

And I also tried to add more patterns to it so it looks more happy and cheerful.

After the second consultation with the lecturer, he likes designs 1 and 5 for sketch number 5, design 5 looks happier and more pleasing but the lecturer suggested me to use design 1 but add some dimension and shadow.

Below are my process from the black and white sticker to the color sticker and also the sticker with shadow and dimension.

In the end, I choose the outcome from process 5 as my final submission.

Feedback

Week11
Sketch 3 could work, but if I had to fit it in a square, there would be a little space around it, and maybe I'd have to have another smaller balloon around it to cover the space. There are lots of nicer ones, sketch2 and 4 are good, sketch 5 could work too, but sketch4 is too long to fit in the square, so I have to make changes.

Week12
The design for the sticker is good and just fills up the empty holes with a white background.

Week13
Sketch number 5, design 5 (figure 15) is a lot happier to look at, but the lecturer suggested the black one, sketch number 5, design 1 (figure 10). Add some dimension and shading to my sticker to make it stand out.

REFLECTION

Experience:
I have tried making WhatsApp stickers by using a smartphone application before, but I have never tried to make a sticker from 0. It is fun and useful for me, and when I send my stickers to my friends, it really gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Observations:
I observed that task 3B was indeed different from previous tasks or exercises, in which we were allowed to use the other fronts besides the 10 typefaces that were chosen at the beginning of the semester. In addition, I observed that it was important for us to master Adobe Illustrator too when we were learning typography.

Findings:
I found it easy for me to sketch out the greeting, but when to got to the digitizing stage, it becomes more difficult and challenging. In task 3B, we were working on lettering, so we were given more freedom to modify the front, which was easier for me to work with.

  • Emotional content implied by the text
Letter forms can amplify the emotional weight of a text. The delicacy of smooth italicized strokes may best convey a poem about nature. The uplifting rhythm of heavy italics may give prominence to a political statement. The rational intellectualism of old-fashioned typefaces may add to the believability of a well-reasoned debate.

Other factors can also influence emotional content. A rounded shape and lighter weight may convey a more feminine vide. The opposite is usually true for products that appeal to the male demographic, these products typically have more weight and are more square and "muscular" in appearance.

The color of typeface can also affect its emotional content. We think warmer or more low-key shades are more feminine; primary colors appeal to children; deep burgundy, forest green, and navy are more masculine. These are all stereotypes, but stereotypes exist for a reason and can be used very successfully to appeal to a specific audience emotionally.

The six light bulbs, and glowing filaments spell out the word energy, literally and figuratively embodying the concept. The colors and methods used here give the audience a positive and warm feeling.

A giant scale, festive colors, and a bouncing beach ball to add contrast to the scale, is an example of saying "interesting" even if you don't recognize it at all. Shadows add space, a number bouncing on a baseline, a slanted exclamation point, all these details help produce a vivid effect. Here, the counter space becomes a container for an introductory text.
