Design Principle
Project 2: Sense of place
Lecture 7
In the simplest description, a designer's role is to solve problems with
effective visual communication. "Problem" that a designer solve are aplenty-
ranging from personal goals to community events, and from corporate functions
to world-changing projects- all through functions to world-changing projects-
all through creative, visual communication means.
Now, how does a designer "know" what imagery or content to include in the
design? We understand that the client informs the designer of the purpose of
the project. But, when it comes to visual ideas, how do designers work? This
is where observation comes in. Being observant means being attentive to your
surroundings, paying attention to the details, and being analytical about
them.
Observation is important to designers as it enables them to see "problems", as
well as getting ideas for solutions to those problems.

Project 2
Visual research
Last week, my friend and I visited GMBB, which has an art gallery upstairs, so
we visited that gallery as well. Through visiting the art gallery, I found a
lot of creative works from different creators. Here are some photos that I
took while visiting the art gallery, the artwork there gave me a lot of ideas
for my project 2.

And among all the artworks, there was one piece that caught my attention the
most, it was a pop-up book showing the author's childhood room, full of
nostalgia. This piece of work gives me a warm feeling and also a sense of
security, perhaps because of the 3D wall that surrounded the book.

Process
For my project 2, I wanted to work on my childhood study room, which
has been rented out to someone else and I don't have the opportunity to
go back again. It was a challenge for me to get any photos of the study
room, but since the project is about the "sense" of a place so I think
it won't cause a big problem for me.
When I was little, I used to play in my study room instead of studying. I
always hid in the cupboard and imagine myself as an explorer, exploring
the jungle. Hiding in the cupboard gave me a sense of security, and I
loved that feeling, so the study room become my favorite place in my
childhood house.
The idea of the pop-up book best fits the target for me to show a sense of
security, so I decided to use the idea of a pop-up book for my project 2.
Before starting my project, I first created a simple model for my pop-up
"card", since I only had one page.

And after creating the model, I started creating the elements that
would be displayed in the pop-up card, and I decided to show my
working process through a time-lapse video.

Instead of making a normal pop-up book, I decided to add little
paper-cutting techniques to show the shadow.

Feedback
Since I didn't show any ideas to the lecturer but only have the idea to
make something related to my childhood memories. The lecturer shared her
childhood memories with me and reminded me that we don't need to create
a "building" to match the theme of the sense of "place", but remember to
focus on the word "sense".

Brief reflection for weeks 10-11
In the process of completing project 2, I realized that a good design
artwork not only presents the message the author wants to express, but
also the feelings of the author. The pop-up book that I saw in the art
gallery really gave me a warm feeling, and I could even imagine how the
author and his parents lived in that place.
