Design Principle

Lecture 03:Harmony & Unity

Harmony

Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait and it becomes monotony without variety. Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style, or mood.

Unity

Unity refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout the design, whether they're colors, shapes, or materials to pull the look together. Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme. Although unity and harmony may sound similar, they each play distinct roles in the way we experience design.

After consulting with the lecturer, I learn that there is a slightly different between harmony and unity. Harmony shows a comfortable visual experience with proximity colors that form color harmony, but the lack of contrast might be its disadvantage. It is difficult to achieve unity without harmony, but unity can come out with some contrast to let the design be more personality and interest.

Scale and Proportion

Scale and proportion are both design elements that have to do with size. Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in a design or artwork. Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in relation to other parts of the same object. Designers have used scale and proportion throughout the centuries to depict or distract from the ideal. Scale refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure. Scale can be determined in two ways: actual measurement and visual estimates based on the comparison.

Scale (cont'd)

Architectural drawings and scale models are examples of the applied use of scale. Also, scale is used to specify or illustrate details based on the relative sizes of objects. Substantial deviation from a normal scale relationship can create dramatic results and visual interest within the design or composition.

Proportion

Proportion in art and design is the relationship of two or more elements in a composition and how they compare to one another concerning size, color, quantity, degree, setting, etc.; i.e. ratio. Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements concerning size or quantity. The effective use of proportion in design often results in harmony and unity.

Below are my personal understanding regarding scale and proportion, and I would like to present it in a sketch.

Lecture 04: Symbol, word & Image

Symbol

A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else. In design, symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even a whole story.

There are two branches of symbols, which are figurative representations and non-figuration representations. Under figurative representations, there are two more branches, which are visuals and graphic symbols. Graphic symbols are divided into three types, pictorial symbols, abstract symbols, and arbitrary symbols.

Pictorial symbols

Image-related and simplified pictures. Pictorial symbols are useful for educational materiel as they able the learner to see the object of study in an almost real visual form.

Abstract symbols

Abstract symbols can look like the objects that they represent but have fewer details.

Arbitrary symbols

Arbitrary symbols have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent. The symbol is invented with the meaning constructed. Many are based on geometric shapes and colours. We have to learn arbitrary symbols.

Word and Image

Imagery is a vital part of the design, be it print or digital. Users and viewers are able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design. It is therefore important to use suitable and relevant images when designing.
Choosing the right words to pair with the imagery is of high importance as it would deepen the meaning of the design. A suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.
Typography is the design and arrangement of text to convey a message or concept.

Exercise

In exercise 3, we were asked to choose two design principles and create an ark work according to them. We were allowed to use any material, so I choose the digital method for my work presentation.

Before I start my exercise, I took some photos of abstract symbols that I found in daily life to improve my understanding. Abstract symbols are pictures that are easy to understand but have lesser detail.

Part 1
Below are my visual research for the work of harmony, those pictures represent both harmony and unity with harmony in color or shape.

Below show my work with different colors of cats aligning neatly.

By using different background colors, it shows harmony and unity. (Soft color-harmony, and sharp color-unity)

Those are the final outcome, with the shape and soft colors background representing both unity and harmony.

Part 2
I decided to work on the poster to present the design principle of word and image, and below are my visual research.

I took those photos by myself to create this work.

And below are my final work. The principle of word and image are required us to have a good understanding of typography.

Feedback

Week5
The concept of changing the background to form both unity and harmony is good, and the cats are neatly lined up.

Week7(overall feedback)
The unity work (figure22) with sharp colour background is too strong for unity, just put the harmony work for the final submission. For the first work for word and image (figure27), try to adjust the colour and the length of the paragraph to make it fit well with the background. Select the second work for word and image for final submission, remember to reduce the space between two paragraphs below, and make sure the A and t in the headline are aligned.

Brief reflection for week 5-6

The design principle we learned this week is a bit confused to me, especially for unity, harmony, scale, and proportion. But luckily, through the lecturer's explanation and my own research, I have generally understood.
